With plastic high on the public agenda, Veolia has launched Procycle, a service for recycling harder-to-treat materials, as well as those previously deemed unrecyclable - including sweet wrappers, straws and plastic toys.
Available in public spaces, the service utilises distinctive new containers and deploys a post-back system to Veolia’s recycling facility, from where materials are sent to a network of reprocessors in the UK and Europe to be turned into new products including garden furniture, plant pots, or even a virgin plastic replacement.
Richard Kirkman, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, says:
"We don’t want to let recycling leave a bitter lemon taste in people’s mouths.
So now when you are sucking on your rhubarb and custard you can be confident that your wrapper could be recycled.
"So if you are slurping your smoothie through a straw or just clearing out the house of toys you can know they are being transformed into new products."
Veolia believes the new solution will help to reduce the environmental footprint left by consuming over a billion kilograms of sweets, sending 1.4 million tonnes of textiles to landfill, and using 4.5 million straws in the United Kingdom.
Procycle is available to new and existing Veolia customers in the UK who are interested in increasing their recycling rates.
