Engineering and facility services business Pareto reports it achieved carbon neutrality in 2022 in accordance with the UK's Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting ( SECR) regulations .
The SECR regulations distinguish 'Scope 1' emissions - or those generated from gas, oil or other fuel used in buildings, vehicles and other equipment owned or controlled by an organisation, and 'Scope 2' emissions which are a by-product of electricity generation, with Pareto reporting carbon reductions across both classes.
Pareto's support for The Topaiyo Redd+ Project in Papua New Guinea helped it achieve a full carbon offset. The project aims to protect the country's extensive rainforest and a wealth of biodiversity, and to provide benefits for local communities. By providing income sources through carbon finance, the project additionally helps prevent deforestation. Instead of deforesting land for timber production, local communities can earn income from conservation and sustainable management initiatives.

Daniel Wright, Chair of the company's Environmental & Sustainability Committee, says: “We feel the need to drive the revolution in reducing carbon emissions from FM service providers.
"Too many of our competitors are committing to dates 15/20 years into the future and we feel more needs to be done now.

Other sustainability initiatives championed by Pareto last year included a planting programme for over 500 trees, removing more than 50kg of plastic from the ocean, funding wild gardens in schools, and supporting the production of organic honey.
