Saving on Energy

Mitie has supported Royal Mail Group in achieving significant energy savings of over 16.69 GWh - equivalent to the annual usage of 1,100 UK homes - within a 12-month period.

This milestone marks the first year of a five-year partnership aimed at helping Royal Mail Group achieve a minimum of 15% energy savings across its top 230 energy-consuming sites by 2026.

The energy savings achieved thus far, with 12.23 GWh of gas and 4.46 GWh of electricity, resulted from the implementation of no-cost and low-cost energy efficiency measures.

These optimisations primarily focused on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as lighting.

Examples of measures implemented include on-site energy audits, building management system reviews, and lighting control system optimisation in main sorting halls.

Regular monitoring of energy performance enabled targeted investigations into areas of higher-than-expected consumption.

These cost-effective measures also led to approximately £1.3 million in savings for Royal Mail Group over the past year.

Mitie brings ten years of expertise in supporting customers on their decarbonisation journeys by implementing low-cost energy conservation measures (ECM).

This approach aligns with Mitie's "Decarbonisation, Delivered" framework, which offers a range of solutions to assist British businesses in reducing carbon emissions, cutting costs, and ensuring energy supply.

To ensure transparency and accuracy, Mitie and Royal Mail Group collaborated with EEVS, a neutral third party, to independently verify the savings attributable to the scheme.

The savings achieved this year demonstrate the impact of affordable energy conservation measures and confirm our progress towards our goal of 15 per cent energy reduction across Royal Mail Group's estate.

The EEVS-assured figures have been utilised to determine and validate the results for the first year and will continue to be used throughout the duration of the scheme.

Pradyumna Pandit, Managing Director, Energy and Decarbonisation at the facility services provider, says, "We're proud to support Royal Mail Group's mission to increase energy efficiency across its large and complex estate.

Greg Sage, Deputy Director Corporate Affairs & ESG at Royal Mail Group, adds, "Our partnership with Mitie has demonstrated the financial and environmental savings that can be achieved through effective energy management of our buildings.

By optimising the equipment already in place and raising energy awareness among our colleagues, we contribute to our environment strategy, Steps to Zero, aimed at mitigating climate risks and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

Mitie's expertise in energy optimisation, combined with EEVS' independent verification, provides a robust model for delivering significant energy and financial savings across our estate."

Ian Jeffries, Managing Director at EEVS, comments, "We are delighted to support Royal Mail and Mitie in their successful partnership using EEVS-verified figures.

Our impartial role as a 'fact-checker' is crucial in determining the energy-saving impact of the scheme and building an open and collaborative relationship between the organisations.

Both Royal Mail and Mitie demonstrate leadership in this space, and independent verification is increasingly recognised as essential for instilling confidence and encouraging the adoption of high-performing schemes like this one."
