Recycling in Haringey just got easier and more accessible thanks to a suggestion by residents.
Nine libraries in the North London borough will now host dedicated recycling stations where residents can drop off items which should not be disposed of as general household waste.
Residents emphasised the need for more accessible recycling options for smaller household items, such as batteries, printer cartridges, and lightbulbs.
While they are eager to recycle more, navigating the available options were proving to be complicated.
These items often contain valuable materials that can be reused, recycled, or recovered.
By giving them to a local library instead of discarding them in household bins, residents can contribute to protecting the environment and keeping recyclable resources in circulation.
The new recycling stations are part of Haringey’s ongoing commitment to Destination 50 - making recycling easier for all residents and increasing our recycling rate to 50 per cent.
Cllr Seema Chandwani, Cabinet Member for Resident Services & Tackling Inequality, says: “This is a fantastic suggestion from local residents to make recycling easier in our borough.
Together, we can reduce waste, improve sustainability, and make Haringey a greener place to live.
“Residents will now be able to dispose of batteries, textiles, books, lightbulbs, printer cartridges and keys in all nine libraries across Haringey.
“We have heard from residents that they want to do the right thing and recycle more, but disposing of these items required multiple trips to different locations.
“Having central spaces, in locations within communities will remove a lot of the barriers and complications.
"Together, we can reduce waste, improve sustainability, and make Haringey a greener place to live."
