Letters: Ofgem's Support for Cleaner and More Secure UK Energy Networks
David Pownall, VP Power Systems at Schneider Electric UK&I, comments on Ofgem's provisional approval of a £24bn investment into UK energy networks.
Sirs,
Ofgem’s approval of £24bn of investment into Britain’s energy networks is a vital step towards building a modern, resilient grid system in the UK that is better equipped to meet rising demand.
This investment has the potential to accelerate grid decarbonisation and electrification, delivering real benefits for people in the UK.
However, initial investment alone isn't enough; we need to tackle the bigger picture.
With heating and transport increasingly reliant on electricity, demand on the grid will only grow.
This necessitates significant, proactive investments in our transmission but also distribution grids.
The transmission system is already struggling with necessary upgrades.
We must heed this warning and ensure that the distribution grid doesn’t become the next bottleneck.
Dependable, accessible energy networks will ensure that households and businesses feel confident in the UK’s energy future and that we maintain the momentum towards 2050’s net zero target.
