Hertfordshire County Council has awarded Wates a new contract for the delivery of planned, reactive and minor works across its 1,025 corporate buildings, libraries, fire stations, adult day care centres, youth centres, rural estates, open spaces and schools.
The contract, valued at £1.5m a year, will focus on a planned preventative maintenance approach to the council’s 83 main buildings and a reactive maintenance service to the remaining estate.
Delivered by a team of direct labour operatives and subcontractors, Wates will work in partnership with the council for an initial period of three years with an option for a further two-year extension.
Typical works delivered on the contract will include minor refurbishments, roofing repairs and replacements, brickwork, carpentry, fencing, underground drainage, high water pressure jetting, guttering repairs and replacements, maintaining Hertfordshire’s extensive and varied building portfolio.

The contract is expected to include a range of initiatives including employment for a local apprentice, annual work experience opportunities, and a year-on-year uplift in performance targets, enabling the use of local supply chains and efficient payment processes, aimed at saving costs.

Moving into the 19th year of the partnership, Wates will take the next step in the evolution of their work with the Council by introducing electrical vehicles into the contract and recycling products and materials to assist Hertfordshire in their sustainability targets.
The Wates Innovation Network, a marketplace of innovative products, will also be offered to establish sustainable innovations across the Council estate.
