In January 2026, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) launched a white paper setting out the government's plans to reform the water sector, and wider water system in the United Kingdom.
We welcome this long-overdue and ambitious strategy to future-proof the UK's water system. The White Paper is clear in its direction - smarter regulation, cleaner water, and resilient infrastructure. But turning that vision into real-world change will require trusted technologies and supply chain partners that can deliver at scale.
Our sector often talks about innovation, but what we need now is implementation.
The Paper rightly calls for a shift towards 'pre-pipe' solutions as we need to reduce unnecessary flow at the point of use such as taps, WCs, urinals, tanks. Whether it's non-touch washroom controls or demand-driven flush systems, developments in water technology can cut usage without compromising performance or hygiene.
Water systems' manufacturers can also play an important role in the management of stored water since, as the authors of the White Paper note, ageing infrastructure and poor asset health are systemic challenges. Modern mechanical and electronic tank management systems ensure optimal filling and prevent water stagnation - critical for reducing Legionella risk, improving asset longevity and managing storage capacity more intelligently.
Stored water plays an overlooked but vital part in the resilience of the water system. Poorly maintained or inefficient tanks contribute to waste, contamination risks and operational inefficiencies. Similarly, float valves and water storage tank controllers give facilities teams the tools to manage stored water proactively, ensuring both compliance and efficiency.
The government's plan also outlines the need for stronger collaboration between regulators, suppliers and industry. Success of this reform agenda hinges on practical partnerships, especially with manufacturers who understand the nuances of installation, maintenance and lifecycle value.
