Pretty as a Picture

A London sewage system has been crowned one of Britain's best-looking pieces of infrastructure after winning first prize in the RICS National Infrastructure Photography Competition.

Judges loved the composition of the striking image of the Lee Tunnel (which runs under the London Borough of Newham) and how it demonstrates the magnificent scale of such a vast and complex infrastructure project in such an eye-catching way - with people working on the scheme, live in action.

The Judges praised the culmination of textures, light and contrast of beautiful colours as captivating.

The tunnel is the deepest ever bored in the UK's capital city and was designed to capture 39 million tonnes of sewage each year. It was completed in January 2016 and is key to London's future water infrastructure.

Matthew Joseph (www.matthewjoseph.co.uk) received a prize of specialist photography kit to the value of £2,000.
