Expo 2020 Dubai: Supporting SMEs
The latest report on Expo 2020 Dubai from The Big 5 Dubai - which is organised by FM Industry and FM Magazine event partner, dmg events, reveals more than 15,000 businesses have registered with the Emirate's dedicated online procurement portal for the exposition.
In 2016, the UAE's Ministry of Economy announced it would be targeting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with up to 20 per cent of the project's total spend (a figure then estimated at USD 1.36 billion).
As of June, SMEs represented two-thirds of all supplier portal registrants, and were the recipients of more than half of all contract awards.
Future opportunities generated by Expo 2020 Dubai include critical construction logistics packages that are scheduled for award in January 2018, and include delivery management and utilities installations, and the appointment of a waste management contractor.
A final parcel of awards that will include horizontal/infrastructure and site-wide construction packages and extends to public spaces (landscaping, vertical transportation), is also expected in 2018
About Expo 2020 Dubai
Set on a 438 hectare site, Expo 2020 Dubai will open to the public on 20 October 2020 under the theme: "Connecting minds, Creating the Future" and sub-themes, "Opportunity", "Mobility" and "Sustainability".
Construction of the site is expected to complete by October 2019, with 80 per cent of assets designed for re-use after the event.
Expo 2020 Dubai will draw at least 50 per cent of power from renewable energy sources, including the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, and will receive support from official sustainability partner, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.
The Event's organisers have committed to complying with local green building regulations and achieving LEED accreditation and compliance with ISO 20121:2012 (Event Sustainability Management Systems).
UAE contractor Al Futtaim Carillion secured the main construction contract for the development of Theme Districts, beating 35 other bidders for the USD 600 million award.
"The link between renewable energy, sustainable measures and the construction sector is connectivity", observes Portfolio Director of The Big 5 Dubai, Josine Heijmans", before describing the adoption of new building technologies as "vital" for moving forward.

One of the event's features this year is the "Excellence in Construction Summit" where Vice-President of Real Estate for Expo 2020 Dubai, Ahmed Al Khatib, will be a VIP speaker.
Ahmed is responsible for the delivery and management of the site's masterplan and in managing the site's sustainability.
As well as an all-new HVAC hall, the next edition of The Big 5 Dubai will host an "Innovation in Precast Summit", live product demonstrations, and witness the return of The Gaia Awards which celebrate sustainable construction practices.
