Mackwell LIA Certificate Course Outstanding Student
Recognised as the principal entry route into the lighting profession in the UK, the Certificate course has recently been revised to take account of new legislation, the introduction of LED lighting, and the requirement for a greater understanding of the impact lighting can have on people's indoor and outdoor environments.
The course required students to complete three Test Papers and comprehensive Lighting Project. They were assigned a project brief to either provide a lighting scheme for the new offices for an internationally famous architectural practice that just happened to have an internationally famous lighting design department as well. Or provide an upgrade for an existing woodworking company.
Both projects demanded creative thinking and utilised all the lighting knowledge delivered during the course.
During 2017, over two hundred and fifty students completed the LIA Certificate Course. The top five students were selected and invited for an interview at the Lighting Industry Academy, where they were asked to discuss their project and other course content. The 2017 finalists were:
- Sarah Burke from Tyson Lighting
- Jess Costanza from Simmtronics
- Ben Farrell from Apollo Lighting
- Charlotte Millerchip from Into.
- Rebecca Walton from Steon,
The finalists presented their work on the 25th April, to the judging panel consisting of LIA Certificate Tutors Bob Bohannon, Iain McCrae, Paul Stearman and Peter Adams representing Awards Sponsor, Mackwell. The quality of the projects and proposals were exceptionally high.

The finalists were invited to the LIA's Annual Luncheon on 10th May to hear the Mackwell Outstanding Student of the Year announced by LIA CEO Steve Davies.
The accolades went to Sarah Burke from Tyson Lighting, who was presented with the crystal LIA Certificate Award Bowl, along with a certificate and cheque for £500.

The runners up were Charlotte Millership from Into and Rebecca Walton from Steon. They also received a crystal bowl, certificate and cheque for £250.
All the finalists should be commended on their professionalism, the time and energy put into their projects and their exceptional presentations.
