Cementitious grout anchors manufactured by Cintec North America have been used to stabilize the deteriorating staircase inside the Morris Island Lighthouse in South Carolina.
The lighthouse which opened in 1876 stands at 49 metres (161 feet) and was decommissioned in 1962, before being placed on the national register of historic places in 1982.
Following its decommissioning, the circular staircase was showing advanced deterioration due to the salt air environment and there was a real fear it might collapse in on itself.
Anchors were tied to the inner and outer walls of the lighthouse by contractor, Buffalo, NY-based ICC-Commonwealth, with a beam connecting the anchors and staircase.
1 3/8" (35mm) diameter anchors manufactured from stainless steel rebar grade 2205 - 44" (1118mm) long socked 41" (1040mm) with 3" (75mm) of exposed threads were specified to attach brackets to the beam.
