Letters: Euro 2024 Final Good for UK High Streets
Jenni Matthews, Marketing & Insights Director at MRI Software, comments on the impact of last night's Euro 2024 final match on the UK's retail, hospitality and leisure sectors.
Sirs,
England may have been defeated in last night’s final against Spain however the UK’s high streets emerged as champions with weekend footfall rising by an average of +9 per cent.
With weather conditions improving and communities preparing to watch the Men’s Euro’s final on Sunday, towns and cities across the UK benefitted with footfall rising week on week on Saturday (+10.6%) and Sunday (+7.3%) whereas retail parks and shopping centres witnessed significant declines on Sunday of -9.4% and -5%, respectively.
Footfall in UK’s high streets also remained higher compared to 2023 levels on Saturday (+2.6%) and Sunday (+5.3%)
This is a great win for the hospitality sector, especially in light of the washout summer experienced so far this year and continues to highlight the positive impact of sporting events in bringing towns and cities together.
