Aqualia to Manage Burgos Waste Water Plant (WWTP)

Aqualia has won the contract to operate the waste water treatment plant (WWTP) in Burgos, in the region of Castile and León, Spain. The conditions document required the delivery of a very advanced and innovative technical tender alongside a sustainable and consistent financial tender, precisely Aqualia's great asset. In its assessment process, the organisation requesting the tenders, Aguas de Burgos, rejected two financial tenders from other participants that it considered "recklessly low."

Thus Aqualia will manage a WWTP designed to treat an average daily flow of 156,000 cubic metres, involving managing the waste water of more than 1,000,000 equivalent inhabitants. The new plant ensures the treatment of all the waste of the city of Burgos and its surroundings, producing effluents of sufficient quality for re-use and with minimal impact on the River Arlanzón, to which the plant discharges into. The contract is for four years, extendible for another two, and has a global portfolio (value) of almost €3 million.

The WWTP has innovative treatment technologies such as the handling of excessive flow during rain. It can also operate as tertiary treatment during dry spells and consists of three physical and chemical treatment lines, laminar clarifying, ozonising, filtration and disinfection to re-use the water for services.

The facility also incorporates a thermal hydrolysis process in its sludge treatment before the anaerobic digestion of the sludge and treatment to remove nitrogen in run-offs that optimises the quality of the treated water.
