Harris Health Quentin Mease Health Center, a newly renovated specialty facility in the Third Ward area of Houston, Texas, is getting ready to usher in a new era of healthcare.
The facility, which was formerly a Harris Health community hospital with outpatient clinics, will now be home to relocated Harris Health HIV and infectious disease services from Harris Health Thomas Street Health Center and chronic dialysis care from Harris Health Riverside Dialysis Center.
The Renovation
The five-story building has been under construction for over two years and now boasts more than 132,000 square feet of space.
Harris Health's Thomas Street and Riverside centers have been unable to grow within existing space to meet the need for additional volume, which makes this renovation a timely and necessary step forward.
Delivering Enhanced Healthcare Services
Quentin Mease Health Center will provide infectious disease, dialysis, and endoscopy specialty care under one roof.
The facility will accommodate about 17,000 annual patient visits and will have 29 hemodialysis stations and five peritoneal dialysis rooms for chronic dialysis care.
Additionally, it will house an endoscopy center for colonoscopies and other diagnostic care, with the ability to perform 20,000 annual procedures for early cancer detection.
Honoring a Legacy
Harris Health's Thomas Street Health Center was recognized as the first free-standing HIV facility in the U.S.
The center has now been relocated to Quentin Mease, where it will retain its legacy name as Thomas Street at Quentin Mease Health Center.
Harris Health honors the nearly 34-year legacy of the original site, and the new location within Quentin Mease continues to provide patients with the same level of outstanding patient care, treatment, and research.
History of Riverside
Harris Health's Riverside Dialysis Center was established 15 years ago through a collaboration with the City of Houston.

Their demand would often overwhelm emergency staff on a daily basis.
By directing these patients to a dedicated dialysis center, patients were given better treatment and care.
The Future
Quentin Mease Health Center will house an emergency and utility back-up resources for water and electricity, eliminating or reducing any disruption in services due to weather-related events such as hurricanes or torrential storms.

In honor of his contributions to Harris Health and the community, a rededication and open house event will be held at Quentin Mease Health Center on Sunday, June 4.
